The Yashinon lenses used to be called "Luxamar" lenses, When Japan was allowed to export their cameras abroad, they encountered trademark issues with the name Luxamar, thus renamed it Yashinon. If you step down to 8-11 I don't think you can see a difference between them. The Planars and Xenotars are a little sharper than the Tessar and Xenar fully open. Tessar I always thought that the Xenar was a tessar type lens. I've just traded in my Rollei Automat 4's on the MX-EVS version (back to the future!) and I will keep up the comparison. I shoot strictly B&W Re: 150mm/4. Its quite possible the prescription for the Tessar made for Kodak is inaccurate, one would have to examine an actual sample of the lens to know. One thing I *have* noticed is more scratches on Xenar lenses than on Tessar lenses. Dec 6, 2003 · To answer my own question, using the information found on other conversations here, the Trinar is a three element lens, the Tessar type four, and so too the Xenar, very much like the Tessar, and these lenses both shouuld be capable of a finer picture, finer resolution, particularly to the outside of the centre of the lens focus. Xenars were THE lens on almost all Rolleicords and also on the very late Rolleiflex Ts. The Yashinon are copycats or clones of the Tessar lens. Both are fantastic lenses in good condition. From his experience, he said the Xenar performance was much better than the ones from the Rolleiflex T, with the Tessar. Will be sure to post a few resulting pics shortly. All of them are sharp lenses of high quality, even the cheaper Triotar. So they would have pretty much identical performance with similar coatings and shutter type. OTOH, the Kodak lenses analysed are quite good. In my case, I think I've noticed infinitesimally less field curvature wide open and at medium/short distance from the Xenar but also infinitesimally better contrast stopped down and around infinity from the Tessar. A Xenar is a tessar, results will be almost indistinguishable. Among the lenses included is a Tessar made for Kodak. Xenars have a nice look and are very sharp in the center, but not quite as sharp in the corners as a Symmar or Sironar, and with less coverage than the modern plasmats. Both are capable of sharp and contrasty images. A Xenar is a Tessar-type lens, so they vary somewhat over the ages, but it's probably the most popular photographic lens design in history. Obviously Schneider cannot use the name 'Tessar' but they can use the Tessar optical formula which was released to the public domain after the WW2.
